Sentinel's dVPN Network Reaches One Million All-Time Unique Users

After four years, Sentinel has claimed its first crown jewel of adoption milestones.

Sentinel's dVPN Network Reaches One Million All-Time Unique Users

What once seemed so far away has just become hard reality: The Sentinel team and community's single most anticipated statistical milestone since the launch of mainnet in March 2021 has now been reached.

As of today, over one million unique internet users across the world have now used a dVPN.

The millionth user connected at approximately 16:25 UTC.

Within the context of Sentinel statistics, a unique user is an individual wallet address that has established a dVPN session on the Sentinel blockchain during any given timeframe. When these connections are initiated, a special transaction is created by the wallet. Those session creation transactions are flagged as a special category separate from traditional transaction types (like send, receive, or IBC transfer).

Though the countdown to one million lasted approximately four years and six months, the vast majority of the climb took place since the beginning of 2024, when activity on the network surged and achieved sustained levels which made the previous three years seem miniscule in comparison.

To illustrate that point: Over 50% the network's all-time total users have come just within the past twelve months alone (the 500,000 mark was reached last September).

Unique users month-by-month, beginning in December 2022.

In truth, the one million user mark was probably passed months ago, since Sentinel's testnet on Ethereum (2018–2021) also had hundreds of thousands of dVPN users. However, because those occurred in the distant past and aren't quantifiable with any existing analytics utility, the mainnet (2021–) total is the only empirical count that can be cited.

This hasn't been the only exciting record set during this summer: Over fifteen thousand individual users were active on 15 July, setting a new all-time high for connections during a twenty-four hour timespan. Similarly, the month of June had the highest total number of unique users during a single month at 103,076.

What Comes Next?

Just as activity in 2024–25 has ended up dwarfing that of 2021–23, the dVPN network is on the verge of another paradigm-changing jump in sustained user activity.

An established centralized VPN (cVPN) with over five million downloads on the Google Play Store and over a hundred thousand active users per day is in the final stages of onboarding to Sentinel and becoming a dVPN. Though we are still waiting for an official announcement from both parties, the Sentinel team has confirmed that this is a done deal at several points over the course of this year.

This major new player on the network will boost daily user counts (which currently fluctuate between ten and eleven thousand) by a rate somewhere in the range of 1000%. Indeed, an official announcement from the team in January promised that the integration will make current metrics look like "child's play" and that it would catapult Sentinel into the top 1% of DePINs in stats and revenue.

What is Sentinel?

Sentinel is a peer-to-peer global bandwidth marketplace which powers both privacy-focused consumer products and development utilities. The most prominent of these usecases at present are decentralised VPN (dVPN) applications and data acquisition for the training of AI models.
